Brimstone (A Review)

I have a confession to make.  I am a lazy, lazy woman.  That, and I hate driving.  In fact, I hate it so much that it gets factored into a lot of decisions that I make.  Driving time and distance both influenced my choice of employers, residence, and recreation.  I am the worst road trip companion ever.

So, when someone recommended Brimstone Woodfire Grill in Pembroke Pines as a restaurant to try, I put it on the shelf for well over a year.  I figured I would get around to it if I ever had to take a trip to Broward County for any other purposes, which never happened.  Then, one day, someone offered to make the drive and bring me along.  The stars aligned, all signs pointed to Kay and Brimstone, and there I was!

Brimstone describes itself as a Contemporary American Cuisine, and is nestled in an outdoor luxury shopping center in West Pembroke Pines.  The place is modern and swanky, but still kind of casual.

We were seated at an abnormally large table, and our server was incredibly polite and friendly.DSCN0447They bring out bread before the meal, which they say that they bake in-house.  Whether they have an actual pastry chef in the back baking fresh dinner rolls, or this was simply prepackaged frozen dough that is then baked as needed, I don’t know.  But, it was chewy and fluffy, and it was served with butter.  That’s good enough for me.

Since this place calls itself a woodfire grill, I had to see if they delivered on their claims.  I ordered a full rack of their baby back ribs.

DSCN0451They roast their ribs and them finish them off on a grill.  Firstly, I must say that I am glad that they don’t skimp on the portions.  The ribs were exceptionally fall-off-the-bone.  I know that the world is divided on whether ribs should fall off the bone or still have some bite, but I personally prefer that my meat not fight back when I’m eating it.  The sauce was sweet and smokey, which are two of the things that I look for in my barbecue sauces.  The loaded baked potato that I got as a side was also good.  But, it’s also kind of hard to mess up a baked potato.

It’s worth noting that Brimstone has an outdoor patio area.  That night, they were playing Latin music and people were dancing.  It was quite unexpected to see at a “Contemporary American Cuisine” restaurant, but people were enjoying themselves.

Brimstone was a nice experience.  The food was good, and the service was excellent.  I strongly recommend making a reservation, though.  This place seems to be pretty popular with the locals.
