One of the plus sides of knowing your way around the kitchen is that food is quite often an acceptable form of currency in my social circle.  Oftentimes, people will happily trade goods and services for the right dish.  And, really, who ISN’T more likely to lend a helping hand if it means you will almost definitely get some good food out of it at some point?

So, when one of my friends helped me out of a serious bind, I promised her something delicious in return.  Since dulce de leche is one of her absolute favorite things, I wanted to make something that had dulce de leche in it.  This recipe for chocolate dulce de leche rolls came to me in the morning of the day that she was scheduled to come and collect on my debt. Embarcadero 41 (A Review)

Embarcadero 41 caught my attention a few months ago for being a Peruvian restaurant that was slightly on the fancier side.  Since it’s located in Downtown Miami, and hard to get to (parking in Downtown is always a nightmare), it took me a while to get myself to go check it out. (more…)

    Dulce de Leche Brownies

When I was a teenager, I wasn’t allowed to get a job.  My “job,” I was told, was to get good grades.  So, in order to make a little bit of spending money, I started making brownies and selling them at school.  I quickly became known as “Brownie Girl,” and it would be a miracle of my batch of brownies for the day even made it to lunchtime.  Some of my friends still talk about them.

It’s hard to believe that this happened about half of my lifetime ago.  And, back then, my brownies were made using boxed brownie mix.  My friends still insist that I did something magical to the brownies, when all I ever really did was add a little bit of vanilla extract to my brownie batter.  Brownies became such a staple of my everyday life that, after high school, I went through a period where I absolutely couldn’t stand them.  I’m over it now, but it took a very long time.  These days, my brownies are made from scratch. • Burger Battle 2015

    Burger Battle 2015

If you’ve been following the blog for a while, then you know that Burger Battle is one of my top most anticipated food events every year.  And, since we know that I hate driving, the fact that I drive up to Ft. Lauderdale every year for this should say it all.  You’ve got all of these popular Broward restaurants competing to see who makes the best burger, and you get to TASTE EVERY SINGLE ONE!  It’s like being a kid in a candy store, only a grown woman instead of a kid, and burgers instead of candy.  Okay, so that analogy failed, but it’s a great event!

Which burgers rose to the top of Burger Battle 2015, and which ones floundered?  Let’s find out! (more…)

  • Brimstone (A Review)

    Brimstone (A Review)

I have a confession to make.  I am a lazy, lazy woman.  That, and I hate driving.  In fact, I hate it so much that it gets factored into a lot of decisions that I make.  Driving time and distance both influenced my choice of employers, residence, and recreation.  I am the worst road trip companion ever.

So, when someone recommended Brimstone Woodfire Grill in Pembroke Pines as a restaurant to try, I put it on the shelf for well over a year.  I figured I would get around to it if I ever had to take a trip to Broward County for any other purposes, which never happened.  Then, one day, someone offered to make the drive and bring me along.  The stars aligned, all signs pointed to Kay and Brimstone, and there I was! • April Lapse and an Update

Well, I’ve gone and done it.  I broke my promise to post at least one recipe and one review per month.  April was kind of a crazy month, so I owe all of my loyal readers an apology.

In other news, I bought a house (yay!)!  The kitchen, while large, is just as outdated as my previous one (boo!).  I’ll need to work on that.  Additionally, mortgage payments now put me firmly back in the “broke” category.  So, perhaps I won’t be reviewing as many fancy restaurants as I did in the past.  This might actually give me a chance to try some of the food trucks and “hole in the wall” joints that I keep putting on the back burner.

    Stay tuned for more deliciousness!

  • Bourbon Pecan Pie

    Bourbon Pecan Pie

March 14th was Pi Day!  Being the nerd that I am, how could I let the date pass without making pie?  I don’t really making fruit pies, because I am not a fan of cooked fruit (I know, I’m a weirdo).  But, this pecan pie is always a hit when I make it.  And, while certain scandals that came to light have made me dislike her as a person, I’ve got to admit that Paula Deen can make a good pie.

    Cafe Maxx (A Review)

Normally, I am allergic to driving long distances.  However, Cafe Maxx was recommended to me by a reliable source, and I am not one to shy away from a commute if there is a good meal to be had at the destination.  With that in mind, I made the trip to Cafe Maxx in Pompano Beach to see if they would live up to the recommendation.

  • Brunch at Edge Steak and Bar

Brunch at Edge Steak and Bar

Sundays are usually “chore day” at my place.  That’s when I get all of those things done that I’ve been too busy (or lazy) to take care of during the week.  As such, I normally don’t get out much on Sundays.  That is, until someone says the word “brunch.”  Honestly, is there anything else worth leaving your house on a Sunday for?  Okay, I’m sure there are a lot of things, but none of them will be as satisfying as BRUNCH!

Brunch buffets are great, because they have tons of variety.  Even the most finicky eaters should be able to find something that they like.  And, gluttons like me can get their fill of a little bit of everything.  Brunch at Edge Steak and Bar caught my attention because of the magnitude of the variety.  How often do you get Cuban lechon, Mexican tacos, and barbecue in the same setting?  It was just impossible to resist.

    Red Velvet Nutella Rolls

Normally, I suck at posting recipes that have a holiday theme.  In fact, it’s by sheer luck and coincidence that I came across a recipe for Red Velvet Nutella Rolls from Yammie’s Noshery just one week before Valentine’s Day.  They’re red velvet, and they’re shaped like hearts!  It’s as though the universe itself was telling me that this needed to go on the blog pretty much immediately.  I don’t think I waited even 24 hours before grabbing some Nutella at the grocery store and getting to work.
