    Burgerliscious 2018

Burgerliscious 2018 is the eighth year of this Coral Gables Burger Festival.  After missing it last year (I was on a cruise; shame on me!), I went this year determined to make up for lost time.  Once again, my event timing interfered, as my trip to the Epcot Food and Wine Festival this past weekend left my stomach and palate feeling overloaded.  Still, I was determined to go and taste every single burger available.  And, what is exactly what I did.

My review of each burger is purely subjective and based on my own personal preferences.  As I hate mayo, pickles, and pairing sweet with savory, burgers that had any of these probably didn’t rate very highly with me.  This is not a reflection of the restaurant or the quality of their food, and should not discourage anyone from checking them out.  That being said, here are my thoughts on all of the offerings this year…

    Burgers 1-4

    • Burger 1: The Spartan by Clutch Burger
      • Lamb and wagyu blended patty with merguez sausage, Tzatziki sauce, roasted pepper Harissa sauce, feta cheese, and cucumber
      • Mediterranean/Greek flavors are not really my thing, but this burger was actually pretty good.  The meat was moist and the patty didn’t taste gamey, despite the lamb.
    • Burger 2: Sweet Thai Sliders by The Mighty Spark
      • Thai seasoned chicken patty with peanut sauce and broccoli slaw on brioche
      • This is, quite possibly, the first time that a non-beef burger has caught my attention at one of these events.  It really did pay homage to Thai flavors in a way that brought out the sweet undertones of the cuisine without ruining the savory aspects of a burger.  Plus, they shared the recipe!
    • Burger 3: The Frita by Off the Mile
      • A chorizo burger with potato sticks, Sriracha mayo, and sweet plantain
      • I appreciated the effort, but this burger kind of missed the mark for me.  The patty was a little bit dry, and the plantain kind of overtook the rest of the burger, so the flavors never really came together.
    • Burger 4: The Tarpon Bend Burger from Tarpon Bend
      • A burger with white cheddar cheese and bacon onion jam on a Challah bun
      • This was a solid burger, and likely a burger that I would order when it shows up on a menu.  Though, for a competition, I feel like they played it a little bit safe.

    Burgers 5-8

    • Burger 5: Untitled Burger by Morton’s Steakhouse
      • A burger with bacon jam and blue cheese butter on a brioche bun
      • I’ll be honest, I was not excited at all about this burger when I saw them assembling them.  It just sounded so plain.  Then, I took a bite, and as the juicy patty gave way in my mouth, the flavors just exploded everywhere.  Not many ingredients, but each executed with such perfection and precision that I just couldn’t stop eating.  Not only did they get my vote, but I call for blue cheese butter to become a pantry staple.
    • Burger 6: The Maple Bacon Cheddar Cheese Burger from Books and Books
      • A burger with caramelized onions, maple bacon, and cheddar cheese
      • This burger was a huge departure from my previous festival experiences with Books and Books.  Normally, their burgers are “out of the box” creations like turkey in pita, vegan burgers, and so on.  This was actually a great, simple burger that was enjoyable to eat.
    • Burger 7: The Bacon Jam Burger by House Kitchen and Bar
      • A burger with bacon jam, white cheddar cheese, red pepper aioli, lettuce, and pickles
      • The patty on this burger was juicy and flavorful, but unfortunately as a mouthful all I tasted was pickles and mayo (two of the burger toppings that I dislike the most).
    • Burger 8: La Bestia by Pizco y Nazca
      • A blended beef burger with potato sticks, spring mix, rocoto pepper aioli, and tomato jam on a pretzel bun
      • As with the previous time that they entered their signature burger, Pizco y Nazca stands out with a successful interpretation of Peruvian-inspired flavors on a bun.  The “mayo” flavor of the aioli did stand out more than I remember, which is mostly just nitpicking.

    Burgers 9-12

    • Burger 9: The Ranchero Burger by Miller’s Ale House
      • A burger patty stuffed with bacon, cheddar, and jalapeño and topped with pico de gallo and garlic aioli
      • I think that there was some thought put into each component of the burger, but not into how to tie all of them together.  What we ended up with was a burger where the individual components were at war with each other to stand out, but they never quite came together as a cohesive burger.
    • Burger 10: Untitled Burger from Shula’s 347
      • A burger with Manchego cheese, maple bacon jam, and guava sauce
      • I think that this was the first time that I actually enjoyed guava on a burger.  The sauce was tangy sweet, but not so sweet that you wondered by there is dessert on your burger.
    • Burger 11: Untitled Burger from Doctor’s Hospital
      • A burger with honey cured bacon, potato gallette,Monterey Jack cheese, and secret sauce.
      • If you’re curious, a potato galette is sort of like a savory pancake made of potato.  Also, it is quite delicious on a burger.
    • Burger 12: McFoie Sliders from Bulla Gastrobar (Burgerliscious 2018 Best in Bun Winner)
      • A burger with Mahon cheese foam and served on a handmade steamed bun
      • This burger was absolutely surreal, but not in a bad way.  The steamed bun really made this burger stand out.  Biting it was like biting into bread-flavored air.  The name of the burger seemed to suggest that the burger might have Foie Gras on it, but if it did then I couldn’t taste it (which is a good thing).

    Burgers 13-16

    • Burger 13: Untitled Burger from Dune at The Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne
      • A bison and Foie Gras burger with bacon demi glace and truffle aioli
      • The pairing of bison and Foie Gras is actually a smart move.  Bison is a very lean meat, so adding the fatty richness of the Foie Gras would help to prevent a dry patty.  Despite this, the burger just didn’t work for me.  I think that the foie gras just made it taste too “earthy.”
    • Burger 14: The Knaus Berry Burger by 109 Burger Joint
      • An Angus beef burger with caramelized apple, Swiss cheese, and bacon on a Knaus Berry Farms sticky bun.
      • If you are a fan of sweet/savory pairings, then this burger is for you.  As I am not, I was unable to wrap my head around it.  But hey, there must be a reason why McGriddles are still on the McDonald’s breakfast menu.  This is just taking the gourmet approach to them.
    • Burger 15: Burger and the Beast by Jr’s Gourmet Burgers (Burgerliscious 2018 People’s Choice Winner)
      • A burger with grilled onions, signature homemade pink sauce, and American cheese on a slider bun
      • As usual, I am apparently the only human being in all of South Florida who hates mayo, and therefore hates all variations of “pink sauce” that appear on burgers around here.  This burger didn’t do it for me, but the public felt otherwise.
    • Burger 16: The Fritanga Especial by Pincho Factory
      • An all natural Angus beef patty with fried cheese, tangy cilantro slaw, guacamole and aji amarillo sauce on toasted brioche
      • This burger was a bit misleading.  The name implies Nicaraguan-inspired ingredients, but they sneak the Peruvian aji amarillo in there as if we won’t notice that you’ll never see that in any fritanga.  It threw the burger a little off balance.

    Burger 17 and desserts

    • Burger 17: The Pub Burger from Carolina Ale House
      • A burger with cheddar cheese, secret sauce, onion strings, and bacon
      • Poor Carolina Ale House.  I almost left without tasting them because they arrived late and then had issues getting their grill going.  The burger was good, but didn’t stand out in any way.  Still, for all of the issues that they ran into during the event, they should be very proud of what they put out.
    • Cookies from Night Owl Cookies: Night Owl Cookies seems to be a foodie fest regular, as I think I have seen them at almost any local festival.  Their cookies are a bit too sweet and dense for my tastes, but they seem to be quite popular.
    • Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream Sundae from Frice Cream: This was Seminole Squash ice cream with bourbon caramel sauce, vanilla whipped cream, and a brown sugar waffle cone.  For starters, I would like to say that I have made pumpkin ice cream at home.  It has NEVER turned out as creamy and luscious as this ice cream was.  However, the waffle bowl that they served it in was hopelessly brittle.  Using the tiny wooden paddle that we were given in lieu of a spoon, each attempt at scooping the ice cream resulted in breaking the waffle cone bowl until I was basically holding the ice cream itself in the palm of my hand.  I ate it right out of my hands without a second thought, because it was THAT good, but in the future they might want to think about putting them in a small plate or bowl for more stability.  And, maybe giving actual spoons.
    • Mini Dessert Bar from Seasons 52: The Seasons 52 dessert bar also makes a comeback, and adds some different flavors.  Last night we had pecan pie, pumpkin pie, key lime pie, and S’mores brownie.

Congratulations to the winners of Burgerliscious 2018, and I am looking forward to next year!

  • Burgerliscious 2016

    Burgerliscious 2016

Another year, another barrage of burger competitions.  As usual, Burgerliscious in Coral Gables is the last burger festival that I attend every year, and  the competition was fierce!  Local restaurants brought out their “A” game.  And, as usual, some fared better than others.

I enjoy the fact that a lot of these competitors tend challenge my idea of what the “ideal” burger is, and sometimes even bring me around to trying new things on my burgers.  Of course, this means getting out of my comfort zone and trying burgers with toppings that I typically don’t like (hello there, mayo, onions, and pickles).  Sometimes, I wind up pleasantly surprised.

So, who impressed me at Burgerliscious 2016?  Let’s see!

    Burgerliscious 2016 1-4

    Burgers 1-4

    • Burger #1: Fetes and Events – Fondue Burger
      • Beef sliders with truffle tomato jam, crispy prosciutto, and brown butter sweet potato bread.
      • What stood out the most to me about this burger was the crispy prosciutto, which was a pleasant salty crunch for me.  Unfortunately, the fondue was kind of lumpy and the burger was already cold, which ruined it for me
    • Burger #2: Swine Southern Table and Bar – Swine Burger Sliders
      • Short rib, brisket, and smoked pork blend patty with homemade dill pickle, thick-cut house-smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, American cheese, and Swine Special Sauce
      • Swine, whenever they participate, always turn out their same signature burger.  As the saying goes, “Don’t mess with the classics.”  As always, it’s a strong contender with an incredibly juicy and flavorful patty, awesome bacon, and melty cheese.  It was one of my favorites
    • Burger #3: The Big Easy – The Big Easy Burger
      • Local natural prime beef patty, tomatoes, red wine onion jam, rocket leaves, Braai sauce
      • I had two Google the last two ingredients on their burger to even know what they actually were.  Despite the exotic ingredients, this burger was pretty ordinary.  What stood out the most was that the bread was kind of dry and hard, which wasn’t pleasant for me
    • Burger #4: Christy’s – Christy’s Slider
      • House-ground sirloin burger, portabella mushroom, aged Swiss cheese, truffle aioli, and bibb lettuce on a Hawaiian roll
      • I’m usually not a had of mushrooms on my burgers, but this burger’s bite of portabella was one of my favorites of the evening.  The flavors of the burger came together very well.

    Burgerliscious 2016 5-8

    Burgers 5-8

    • Burger #5: Doctor’s Hospital – Mediterranean-inspired Burger
      • Bruschetta topping (red onion, garlic, slivered kalamata olives, tomato, european cucumbers, Avocado, lemon zest, and fresh Herbs de Provence), Herb cheese (whipped Mascarpone cheese, whipped butter, fresh garden herbs), chopped fresh arugula, frise, and romaine, on a Hawaiian roll grilled with herb butter
      • Doctor’s Hospital always comes up with some pretty crazy burgers, which kind of makes me imagine that their chef is some culinary mad scientist and we are all his guinea pigs.  I was very fearful when I noticed that there were olives on the burger (which I probably hate even more than mayo), but I tried it anyway.  Sadly, one bite was enough for me to know that this wasn’t for me.
    • Burger #6: John Martin’s – The Pub Burger
      • Beef patty with Irish cheddar, bacon, and pickles
      • This burger was confusing.  It had a patty that was incredibly dry and tasted like it might not actually be beef, although the claims were that it was locally sourced beef.  Maybe it was just the way that it was prepared, but this burger was not a success.  The chips that came with it were great, though.
    • Burger #7: Rok:Brgr – Rok this Way Burger (People’s Choice Winner!)
      • Special “ROK” burger blend patty topped with 10-hour smoked brisket, aged cheddar cheese, Chioptle BBQ aioli, pickled red onions, and house made pickles
      • Rok:Brgr does it again!  The brisket, covered with the melted cheddar cheese, simply melted in your mouth, and the beef patty was juicy and cooked to perfection.  The tang of the red onions gave a nice contrast that rounded the flavors of the burger out.  My only complaint is that this burger is not on their restaurant menu yet.  They need to get on that.
    • Burger #8: The Cafe at Books and Books – The One Night Stand Burger
      • A 50/50 chuck and sirloin blend patty topped with J Wakefield Brewing Up Smoked Ported BBQ Sauce, caramelized onions, and Bleu cheese
      • The Cafe at Books and Books normally serves up one of the weirdest burgers of the evening every year, so it was a shock for me to find their station had such a tame burger.  The Bleu cheese and the caramelized onions paired very well together (*gasp!*…I enjoyed onions on my burger!).  I think this was one of the better burgers of the night.

    burgerliscious2016_9-12

    Burgers 9-12

    • Burger #9: Shula 347 Grill – Shula Slider
      • American Wagyu beef topped with Vermont aged cheddar, Cipollini onions, and bacon jam
      • I was very underwhelmed by this burger.
    • Burger #10: Ventanas – The Ventanas Burger
      • A beef patty with tomato jam, arugula, Bleu cheese, and spiced bacon on a brioche bun
      • This was a very good burger put out by a newcomer on the event roster.
    • Burger #11: Off the Mile – The Frita
      • A Cuban frita (burger patty made with pork and chorizo) topped with potato sticks and sweet plantain
      • I thought I knew what to expect after eating all of those fritas at the Frita Showdown not too long ago, but my first bite was like an explosion of grease in my mouth.  Not pleasant at all.
    • Burger #12: Bricktop’s Slider
      • A burger with bacon, cheddar, and pickles
      • The burger was simple enough, but unfortunately it was incredibly dry

    burgerliscious2016_13-16

    Burgers 13-16

    • Burger #13: Pincho Factory – Pincho Burger (Winner Judge’s Choice)
      • A burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, potato sticks, pink sauce, and American cheese
      • The sauce that they put on this burger is tastes so much of mayonnaise, and they put SO MUCH on it, that I couldn’t get past the first bite.  As usual, I disagree with the judges’ decision on giving them the win, but oh well.
    • Burger #14: BurgerFi – House Veggie Burger
      • House veggie patty with house secret sauce, lettuce, tomato, and white American cheese
      • I was absolutely terrified to try this burger after finding out that it was not a meat patty.  Those fears were unfounded, as the burger was actually very flavorful.  I think that it worked because the patty was not intended to taste like meat, which is where a lot of other meatless burgers fail.
    • Burger #15: American Harvest – The American Harvest Burger
      • beef patty with house dressing, caramelized shallots, creamy fontina cheese, and Dade County Pickles
      • I enjoyed the pickled vegetables served on the side of the burger more than I enjoyed the actual burger.  It wasn’t a bad burger, though.  There were just better ones available.
    • Burger #16: Copper 29 – Pork Slider
      • Pork slider with mango aioli, cabbage, and pickle
      • I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about this one.  I think the mango aioli was a little bit too overpowering, but it had a lot of potential.

    burgerliscious2016_17-20

    Burgers 17-20

    • Burger #17: Iron Tribe – Paleo Burger
      • A beef burger with paleo mayo and paleo bbq sauce wrapped in lettuce and served with plantain chips cooked in coconut oil
      • When I took my first bite, I wanted to look the chef in the eye and ask him what I ever did to deserve this.  That being said, I do appreciate that a healthy food provider made an earnest attempt to give health nuts a burger.  It didn’t work at all for me, but I’m sure that this made some Paleo person’s day.
    • Burger #18: Pisco y Nazca – La Bestia Burger
      • A burger with aji panca, spicy aioli, and potato sticks on a pretzel bun
      • This was the same burger that they made the last time that they participated, only now they’re in slider form.  The slider form kind of messed up the balance of the burger, so all of the flavors get lost in the overwhelming taste of the aji panca.  I think it would have worked better if they had scaled back on that to account for the smaller sizes.
    • Burger #19: Bulla Gastrobar – The Bulla Burger
      • Grass fed Angus beef with Piquillo peppers, tetilla, caramelized onions, and honey thyme glaze on a homemade bun
      • I was excited to try these burgers because they looked so nice and juicy, but they ended up being kind of bland.
    • Burger #20: Tarpon Bend – Sweet Bacon Cheddar Short Rib Burger
      • A burger with aged cheddar cheese, diced red onion, bacon, miso aioli, and balsamic reduction on a Challah roll
      • The patty itself was cooked perfectly, but I don’t think that the actual burger toppings worked very well together.

    Final Burger

    • Burger #21 – Shake Shack – The BBQ Shackmeister
      • An all natural Angus beef cheeseburger topped with crispy beer-marinated shallots and Shack BBQ sauce
      • Shake Shack has a reputation for dishing out some decent burgers, but this burger was a salt bomb.  I needed to drink like an entire gallon of water after one bite.

As usual, there were sweets available to counter all of the savory!

    dscn4329

    Cupcakes provided by Dee-lish Cupcakes.

    dscn4333

And, of course, the usual dessert shots from Seasons 52!

Since it started to rain, I didn’t linger.  But, thankfully, I got to taste all of the burgers at Burgerliscious 2016 before I had to make a dash for the safety of my car.  Until next time!

  • Burger Battle 2016

    Burger Battle 2016

The time finally came for one of my most anticipated events of the year!  Burger Battle returns for the 7th year in a row, and Burger Battle 2016 definitely did not disappoint.  Plenty of burgers and beverages galore, and a chance to see which burgers come out on top.

Naturally, I arrived extra early to make sure that I had plenty of time to eat my fill and taste every burger.

    DSCN2624

Can’t you just smell them already?

In my haste, some of my pictures did not come out as well as I would have liked, so I must apologize for that. Lines get pretty long, and no one wants to wait behind someone taking their time snapping photos when they want to taste a burger.  Which were my favorites, and which should have stayed home?  Let’s find out!

    BurgerBattle2016_1-4

    • Burger #1: Hard Rock Cafe (Winner Best Bar and Grill Burger)
      • Hickory BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger: A burger with cheddar cheese, bacon, caramelized onions, house-made BBQ sauce, and Hard Rock Seasoning
      • This was one of my favorite burgers of the night.  It had my “Burger Holy Trinity”: BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese, and bacon.  Practically any burger that has these ingredients will be a favorite for me.  The house-made BBQ sauce had the perfect blend of sweetness and tang to offset the smokey bacon.  Fantastic.
    • Burger #2: Chef’s Palette at the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale
      • Grilled Brie and Short Rib Burger: Black pepper bacon, Brie cheese, grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, bread and butter pickles, Miso aioli, and topped with a yuca and pepper jack fritter
      • The best part of the burger for me was the yuca fritter.  The burger itself had too many conflicting flavors.  It was like a bunch of people at a table trying to talk over each other, but instead of being heard it becomes just a garbled cacophony.
    • Burger #3: The Downtowner
      • Jameson Bleu Cheeseburger: A burger with Guinness cheese sauce and Jameson glaze
      • I probably could have taken a bath in a tub filled with that cheese sauce, I kid you not.  It was a perfectly smooth blend of cheeses with the bite of stout finishing it off.  The burger patty itself was kind of dry, though.  The sauce helped with that, though.
    • Burger #4: Brgr:Stop (Fan Favorite Winner)
      • The PB&J Burger: A burger with cheddar cheese, peanut butter, candied bacon, and tomato jam
      • This burger scared the hell out of me.  Peanut butter and jelly burger??  A small bit of bravery returned when I saw that the “jelly” was represented by tomato jam.  The first bite blew me away.  It was sweet, salty, and bacon-y all at the same time.  This was in my top 3 of the evening, so it doesn’t surprise me at all that they got a prize.

    BurgerBattle2016_5-8

    • Burger #5: Timpano
      • A burger with Teriyaki glazed onions, mango salsa, red chili aioli, cilantro cabbage slaw, and crispy shoe string potatoes
      • I never have high hopes for burgers that feature fruit or Asian-inspired flavors, as they almost always end up too sweet.  Think that, for this burger, the sweetness of the mango salsa and Teriyaki met evenly with the salty potato strings and tangy slaw.  It actually worked.
    • Burger #6: Shake Shack
      • The ShackBurger: same as always
      • Shake Shack rarely strays from their formula, so it’s hard to say anything about this burger that I haven’t said before.  One of my friends voted for this burger specifically because it was the most straightforward burger.
    • Burger #7: Funky Buddha Craft Food Counter and Kitchen
      • Southern Smash Burger: Charcoal grilled patty with secret spices, roasted jalapeño, pimento cheese, ginger candied bacon, and cider soaked Vidalia onions
      • This burger didn’t really work for me.  It was too heavy on the onion and pimento cheese, and the ginger in the bacon clashed with the rest of the flavors
    • Burger #8: M.E.A.T. Eatery and Taproom
      • Dr. Jelly Finger Burger: same burger as at Hamburger House Party
      • I didn’t try this burger here because I had already tasted it at last week’s event.

    BurgerBattle2016_9-12

    • Burger #9: Ten Palms
      • A burger with diced shallots, Bibb lettuce, tomato aioli, candied bacon, jalapeño cheese, roasted tomato jelly, and fried onions
      • This burger was WAY too sweet.
    • Burger #10: Burger Craze
      • Sushi Surf and Turf: Angus chuck burger with Ahi tuna, bleu cheese crumbles, Wasabi Mayo, Asian Coleslaw, and fresh ginger
      • Seared tuna, beef, and funky cheese do not belong together.  Ever.
    • Burger #11: Shooters Waterfront (Winner Best Knife and Fork Burger)
      • The Sunset Burger: Smoked guajillo glazed beef burger with romaine lettuce, ugly black tomato, sweet & spicy pickles, fried onion nest, and served on a red poppy seed bun
      • Maybe it was because of the strange color, but the bun didn’t taste quite right to me.  Other than that, this burger was okay.
    • Burger #12: Tucker Duke’s Lunchbox
      • The Umami Burger: A burger with bone marrow and red onion jam, aged Gruyere cheese, umami brined Shitake mushrooms, Black garlic aioli, crispy onions, roma tomatoes, and bacon on an onion brioche roll
      • Tucker Duke’s consistently had the longest line of the evening, so I was sure that I was in for a treat.  Unfortunately, this burger failed to deliver.  The shitake mushrooms just took over everything else.

    BurgerBattle2016_13-15

    • Burger #13: Duffy’s Sports Grill
      • Katsu Burger: a breaded and fried burger patty served with Poke Slaw, Hibachi Yum Sauce, and a side of lobster fried rice
      • I took one look at this burger and concluded that I probably wasn’t going to like it.  I couldn’t have been more wrong.  The panko crust surrounding the patty lent for a great crunch, while the beef inside was still moist and juicy.  The slaw on the burger was a tart and refreshing complement to the heaviness of the fried patty.  It ended up getting my vote for the night.  The lobster fried rice that it was served it was also pretty good.
    • Burger #14: Shula Burger (Winner Judge’s Choice, Best Burger Joint, AND Burger Nirvana)
      • The Heater: A burger with four pepper relish, red onion, shaved lettuce, pepper jack cheese, crispy jalapeños, and chipotle spread
      • One bite and I was assaulted by flavors that just didn’t sit well with me.  But, considering how many awards they took home that night, I guess they did something right.  The judges must like heat.
    • Burger #15: Bamboo Beach
      • A burger with hot sauce, American cheese, guacamole, and jalapeño
      • I think that they played it kind of safe and wound up with a burger that was a little too bland.  Not a bad burger, though.
    • Burger #16: Beauty and the Feast
      • They were announced as one of the participating restaurants this year, but I didn’t see them anywhere.  It’s possible that I missed them.

Most of the people that know me will know that a burger like Hard Rock’s would have been my vote for sure.  So, why did I go with Duffy’s Katsu burger?  At the end of the day, Hard Rock Cafe’s BBQ burger was everything I want in a burger, and that’s the problem.  Duffy’s took the concept of a burger and transformed it in such a way that it created an inventive new twist on a burger.  This is a hard thing to do successfully, yet they completely took everything that I know about burgers, turned it upside down, and STILL produced a delicious and succulent product.  Since it was the choice between meeting my expectations and completely blowing my expectations, but impressing me anyway, then I had to go with Duffy’s.

    DSCN2707

As with every year before it, there was a french fry bar!  I didn’t have any this year.  I was too distracted by burgers.  I wasn’t even able to catch the name of the restaurant that provided the fries.  I must be losing my touch.

    DSCN2714

Aaaand, there were sweets available from a local bakery!  Check out those beautiful red velvet cake pops and the adorable shortcake sliders!

Once again, Burger Battle came and went too quickly, but there’s always next year.  Thank you to all of the restaurants that participated and let us eat our fill at Burger Battle 2016.  See you next year!

  • Hamburger House Party 2016

    Hamburger House Party 2016

Burger Beast’s answer to Burger Battle returns to Miami for the third year in a row.  Best of all, they appear to have fixed the logistical issues that plagued last year’s event.  This time around, the theme was 80’s, and it was a nostalgic travel back in time while enjoying some delicious bites.

Twenty restaurants.  Twenty burgers.  One winner.  Well, two if you count People’s Choice, but you get the idea.  Anyway, as usual, I sampled all of the burgers that were being showcased that evening.  Well, at least I thought I did.  I ended up missing one, even though I walked through the area twice after tasting 19 to make sure that I didn’t miss any.  Shame on me.

    HHP2016_1-4

    • Burger #1: Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill
      • The Mofongo – Certified Angus Beef Stuffed with Mofongo and topped with Swiss Cheese & Homemade Sofrito
      • I’m in love.  Mofongo in a burger is just plain genius.  Since plantains are a starchy, they absorb the juices of the meat as it is being cooked, and you don’t end up with that dry crumbly mofongo that some places have.  The kicker was that they even included a side of their version of a red sauce, which is my favorite mofongo dipping sauce. The was the first burger that I tasted that night, and it was definitely my favorite.  They got my vote.
    • Burger #2: Chefs on the Run
      • The Beastie Boys Burger – Angus 80/20 (Churrasco, Chuck, Brisket blend) topped with Herb de Provence Bacon, Provolone Cheese, Gorgonzola Bleu Cheese Mousse, & Ghost Chili-Habanero Butter
      • This burger was actually very good.  I have only recently grown to appreciate “stinky cheeses” on my burgers, and this was a good balance of high-brow ingredients on low-brow food.
    • Burger #3: Crackers Casual Dining
      • Southern Hospitality – Signature Burger Patty topped with Spicy BBQ Mayo, deep fried Pickle Spears, Pulled Pork Cheese Crisp, Smoked Gouda, & Sweet Potato Frizzles
      • All I tasted was pickle. That about says it all.
    • Burger #4: Hate Mondays Tavern
      • Warehouse Burger – Sirloin/Brisket/Smoked Rib Patty topped with Pesto blend with dry Slaw, Maple Bacon, Gouda Cheese, & a little Homemade BBQ sweetness
      • This tasted too much like just a regular burger.  It was a decent burger, but it was simply overshadowed by all of the GREAT burgers that were there.

    • Burger #5: Jr’s Gourmet Burgers (People’s Choice Winner)
      • It’s a Wrap – Burger Patty, Fried Egg, Cheddar & Swiss Cheeses between 2 slices of Bread, all wrapped up in Bacon
      • This burger might have been very close to getting my vote if it hadn’t been for the presence of the fried egg.  Everything else about this burger screamed “Winner!”  I mean, where have YOU seen a bacon wrapped burger before??  Plus, the cheddar cheese that they used was great quality.  I just took a bite and got that cheese stretch that I love so much to go along with my crispy, salty bacon shell.
    • Burger #6: Wholesome Rollers (2nd Place Judge’s Choice)
      • The Wisconsin Butter Burger – Cheddar Cheese, Bacon, Bacon-fat Caramelized Onions, & Chuck’s Jalapeño Ketchup on a Pretzilla Pretzel Bun
      • I can see why this burger ranked highly.  It had three of the things that I LOVE on burgers: cheddar cheese, bacon, and pretzel buns.  The ketchup was a little too spicy for my liking, though.
    • Burger #7: Latin House
      • The Steamed Champ – Butter Steamed Beef, Five Cheese Fondue, Candied Bacon, Butter Lettuce, Heirloom Tomatoes & Roasted Aioli on a Brioche Bun
      • I was very underwhelmed by this burger.  I think the steaming of the patty, butter or not, really didn’t do the meat any favors.  Not much depth of flavor, not even with the other toppings.
    • Burger #8: M.E.A.T. Eatery and Taproom
      • Dr Jelly Finger – Burger topped with Bacon, Bananas, an Onion Ring, Jack Cheese & Blueberry Chipotle Jam
      • At first glance, this is an absurdly weird combination.  Yet, it almost worked.  The sweet undertone was just a little too strong for the burger to be successful.

    • Burger #9: Norman Brothers
      • The B&B Burger – A 50% Wagyu Beef & 50% Applewood Smoked Bacon Burger Patty topped with Avocado, Tomato, Red Leaf Lettuce, Pepper Jack Cheese, House-made Chipotle Aioli, & even more Bacon on a Toasted Bun
      • I think that this would have been a very good burger if there had been less greens on it.
    • Burger #10: Tucker Duke’s Lunchbox
      • Ari 2.0 – Pastrami seasoned Burger with House-made Kimchi, Bacon & Honey Crisp Apple Chutney & Salted Caramel Honey Yogurt
      • Word has it that this was one of the most popular burgers of the night.  I wouldn’t get past my first bite.  Kimchi…yuck.
    • Burger #11: Orange Bear Restaurant
      • Double Bacon Cheddar Bourbon Burger – 75/25 Chuck/Short Rib/Brisket Burger Patty topped with Roasted Garlic Aioli, Habanero Bacon Jam, Sautéed Bourbon Onions, Crispy Bacon, & Bourbon Sauce on a Butter Toasted Roll
      • This was a good burger, but nothing really stood out about it
    • Burger #12: Fat Moe’s
      • Miami Burger – Fat Moe’s Secret Blend Burger Patty topped with Fried Plantains, Pepper Jack Jalapeño Cheese, Candied Onions & Moe’s Secret Sauce and Loose Meat Burger: Layer of Sharp Cheddar torched, layer of Burger Meat,
layer of Cream Cheese torched litely, layer of Burger Meat, layer of Jalapeño Jack Cheese torched & wrapped with Bacon
      • For all of the things that were supposedly on this burger, it really didn’t taste like anything but a plain burger.  I didn’t even taste any plaintain in mine.  The burger itself tasted good, but it just didn’t taste like what I expected from the description.

    • Burger #13: Pincho Factory
      • The Backyard Burger – Short Rib/Brisket/Chuck Patty topped with American Cheese, Caramelized Onions, Papitas & Pink sauce on a Brioche Slider Bun
      • I really missed the Tostones burger that they presented at Burger Brawl 2014.  This burger didn’t have that same “WOW” factor.
    • Burger #14: Shake Shack
      • ShackBurger – 100% All-Natural Angus Beef Cheeseburger topped with Lettuce, Tomato, & ShackSauce
      • In my many years of coming to these burger competitions, I believe I have only seen Shake Shack offer something besides the ShackBurger maybe once.  I guess they have enough confidence in their product that they don’t feel the need to be creative.  And, while it is a tasty burger, it just can’t hold its own against these competitors.
    • Burger #15: Woody’s Burgers
      • Tokyo Burger – Teriyaki Beef (Sirloin/Chuck/Brisket) Patty topped with Caramelized Bacon & Onions, Wasabi Mayo & Pickled Ginger
      • Woody’s attempt at incorporating Asian flavors in a burger was definitely more successful than Tucker Duke’s, but it was still overly sweet for a burger
    • Burger #16: The Local
      • “The Death of Disco” a.k.a. “The Ronald Reagan” – Slider topped with a House-made Ham Croqueta smothered in House-made American Cheez Whiz & Bacon Gravy
      • As with the kimchi burger, one bite of this burger was enough.  Croquetas are not my thing, and this one featured them prominently.

    HHP2016_17-19

    • Burger #17: Jersey Dawg (3rd Place Judge’s Choice)
      • Classic Slider – Ground Beef cooked on a bed of Steamed Onions, topped with American Cheese & served on a Martin’s Potato Roll
      • They must have done something right, because they were close to taking the price.  For me, however, they were just too ordinary.  Delicious, but boring.
    • Burger #18: Doce Provisions
      • Doce Burger – Short Rib Blend Burger Patty topped with Queso Frito, Truffle Aioli, Pickles, Tomato, & Frisee
      • The flavors of this burger were actually pretty darn good, but my patty was waaay undercooked
    • Burger #19: Burbowl (1st Place Judge’s Choice)
      • Juicy Smashed Burger – 100% Never Frozen Angus Beef, Melted Cheddar, Bacon, Grilled Onion and Mushrooms topped with our signature Garlic Chipotle Sauce, our Secret Sauce & our Cilantro Sauce on the side
      • This burger merely LOOKS simple and unimpressive, but was actually quite succulent.  I didn’t even need any of the sauces that it came with.  Fresh meat really does make a difference.
    • Burger #20: 109 Burger Joint (not sampled)
      • Morning in Havana – Two 1.5 oz smashed Coffee rub seasoned Angus Beef Patties, Espresso & Brown Sugar-cured Bacon, Swiss Cheese, Cortadito Sauce, Duck fried Yuca & Croqueta de Congri on a Honey Garlic Glazed Bun
      • I knew that 109 Burger Joint was supposed to be there that evening.  However, after walking around the venue multiple times looking for them, I assumed that they bailed at the last minute.  Thanks to some posters on Yelp, I discovered that they WERE there, and I’m just a blind idiot.  That is unfortunate, because I really would have liked to taste that burger.

In addition to burgers, Burger Beast was kind enough to arrange to have some other tastings available.  There was beer and other spirits, but I don’t drink and largely ignored those tables.  However…

    HHP2016_vendors

There were some great tastings to be had from other stations at Hamburger House Party 2016.  Sweetness Bakeshop offered samples of  variety of dessert shots.  I tried the Death by Chocolate and Tiramisu shots, which were both good.  Hip Pop, a regular at Burger Beast events, paid homage to the 80’s with their homemade pudding pops.  They were offering chocolate and bourbon vanilla.  The chocolate one was, by far, my favorite.  Magic City Casino handed out samples of chicken alfredo sliders.  I won’t lie, I enjoyed those sliders more than I enjoyed some of the burgers.  The breaded chicken was delicious and crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside.  There were also cookies from Night Owl Cookie Co, which I did not taste because I was just too full by then.

Hamburger House Party 2016 was a great event, and I am glad that last year’s unpleasant experience did not deter me from coming this year.  I will definitely be back next year.  Thank you to all of the restaurants that participated, and keep up the good work!

  • Burgerliscious 2015

    Burgerliscious 2015

Another year of Burgerliscious has come and gone, and I certainly had no intention of missing out on this great event.  If you’re just tuning in to the blog, Burgerliscious takes place in Ponce Circle Park in Coral Gables every November.  Here, Coral Gables restaurants get a chance to compete and see which one of them makes the most delectable, finger-licking, lip smacking burger.

I welcome these events as a chance to put my usual picky eating aside and power through flavor combinations that challenge my palette.  Sometimes, it works.  Other times, I weep tears of anguish over what just went into my mouth.  Who was memorable, and who should have stayed home?  Let’s find out!

  • Taurus – A Review

    Taurus – A Review

In a city like Miami, restaurants come and go a LOT.  Oftentimes, they close without warning.  On this particular day, that is exactly what happened.  I took a drive to Coconut Grove with a friend of mine to use a voucher for an Italian joint that we both really like, only to find that it was no longer there.  Hungry, broke, and too lazy to drive anywhere else, we scoured Groupon for any other deals nearby.  That is how we came to find Taurus. • Burger Battle 2015

    Burger Battle 2015

If you’ve been following the blog for a while, then you know that Burger Battle is one of my top most anticipated food events every year.  And, since we know that I hate driving, the fact that I drive up to Ft. Lauderdale every year for this should say it all.  You’ve got all of these popular Broward restaurants competing to see who makes the best burger, and you get to TASTE EVERY SINGLE ONE!  It’s like being a kid in a candy store, only a grown woman instead of a kid, and burgers instead of candy.  Okay, so that analogy failed, but it’s a great event!

Which burgers rose to the top of Burger Battle 2015, and which ones floundered?  Let’s find out! (more…)

  • Riverwalk Trust Burger Battle 2013

    Riverwalk Trust Burger Battle 2013

Burger Battle is easily one of the annual food events that I look forward to the most.  And, why not?  You basically get to walk around, sampling burgers from numerous restaurants competing for the title of “Best Burger”, and then vote for your favorite.  And, as if that wasn’t enough, there is also a French fry bar (catered by Capital Grille this year) and a dessert bar (catered by Susie’s Scrumptious Sweets).  So, with an open mind and empty stomach, I ventured forth into the burger bliss! • Shula Burger (A Review)

    Shula Burger (A Review)

To most South Floridians old enough to remember, Don Shula is a football legend.  To those of us in the slightly younger generation, Don Shula is the name plastered on a chain of high-end steakhouses scattered about South Florida.  It was only a matter of time before the franchise branched out into burgers.  After all, if you know your steaks, then burgers should be a cakewalk.  Thus, Shula Burger was born.
