In a city like Miami, restaurants come and go a LOT. Oftentimes, they close without warning. On this particular day, that is exactly what happened. I took a drive to Coconut Grove with a friend of mine to use a voucher for an Italian joint that we both really like, only to find that it was no longer there. Hungry, broke, and too lazy to drive anywhere else, we scoured Groupon for any other deals nearby. That is how we came to find Taurus.
Taurus is a really small, divey-looking place. It was a Tuesday night, so the place was mostly empty and we were told we could sit wherever we wanted. Our server recommended the mac and cheese. And, it being mac and cheese and all, could I really say no?
They make their mac and cheese with truffle oil, and you can add additional mix-ins for an extra charge. Naturally, we added bacon. This mac and cheese had the creaminess of a mac made with processed cheese, but with a gourmet taste. The bits of smokey bacon added a salty bite.
I ordered the Classic Taurus Burger, which is their signature burger. It’s a 10 ounce Prime beef patty with cheddar cheese, dijonaise, lettuce, tomato, onions, and pepperoncini peppers (which I asked them to leave off). You could swap out the side of fries for something else, but I decided to stick to the classics. The fries weren’t bad, but not particularly memorable. The burger was really good. The patty was cooked to a perfect medium, and was as tender and juicy as a burger should be. The bun was firm enough to hold the burger together without falling to pieces, but not stale or toasted.
In addition to their food, Taurus sports an extensive selection of beer and whiskey. Since I’m not much of a drinker, we didn’t sample anything. Still, I wouldn’t mind coming back the next time I am in the area.
