A little ongoing project that I had for the past couple of weeks was making cupcakes for a baby shower. The anticipated head count was 75 people, which was more than I have ever made in a single go. But, when a friend asks for a favor for such a special occasion, one simply cannot refuse. Little did they know that I also planned on surprising them with a hand-made cupcake tower to present the cupcakes on. (more…)

PeruFest USA 2013
Have I mentioned that I LOVE Peruvian food? Yes? Well, I’ll say it again anyway! PeruFest 2013 billed itself as a gastronomic adventure throughout the different regions of Peru. Since I’d had a pretty good time at the Peruvian Independence Day Festival a few months ago (and, since there was a Groupon out for this one), I decided to check it out. Luckily, I was not disappointed. (more…)

Barley and Swine (A Review)
Barley and Swine appeared on my radar when word came out that the owners of The Joint (which closed down sometime last year) were behind it. And, also because of their very pork-centric menu. Not many other places offer things like bone marrow, pig ears, and pig face vaca frita. In fact, their Miami Spice menu featured an appetizer of crispy pig tails. *GASP!* Now, I am not a particularly adventurous eater, but I must admit that I was curious. So, I made my way over to Downtown Dadeland on a weeknight to check them out. (more…)

Vanilla Cupcakes
As some of you may already know, I am not a big fan of vanilla. So, vanilla or white cakes are not something I dabble with very often. Still, sometimes chocolate needs a break, or you’re making something for someone that is not a fan of chocolate (seriously, what’s wrong with those people!?). So, I had been searching for a while for a recipe for vanilla cupcakes that wasn’t totally bland or dry. Easier said than done! (more…)

Bourbon Steak (A Review)
Well, here we are, Miami Spicing it up again. This time, our target was Bourbon Steak in Aventura. Bourbon Steak has been on my radar for a while, but the funding was just never there to go try it out. This is precisely the reason why I made it my mission to come here during Miami Spice. (more…)

Town Kitchen and Bar (A Review)
Here at The Broke Baker, we are all about trying new things on a budget. So, when Amazon Local came out with a deal for a place called Town Kitchen and Bar in South Miami, I jumped on it. I had never actually heard of this place, but that’s not exactly uncommon. Restaurants come and go around here, and Miami isn’t exactly a small town. (more…)

Bulla Gastrobar (A Review)
Tapas, it seems, are all the rage nowadays. With Miami Spice still in effect, it was a chance for my to try out some tapas for myself. Bulla (pronounced Boo-ya) Gastrobar is a restaurant in Coral Gables that was inspired by popular tapas restaurants in Spain, and was offering a 3 course Miami Spice lunch for $19 per person. It features high-top tables and bar chairs, so it’s not exactly the type of place you’d want to take a disabled or elderly person that can’t climb into one of these seats. But, if you’re young and limber, you’re good to go! (more…)

Chocolate Covered Oreo Cake
A few years ago, I came across this recipe for a Chocolate Covered Oreo Cake online. I thought that the idea was brilliant, but I wasn’t keen on the idea of using boxed cake mix and Cool Whip. For the record, I hate Cool Whip. Let’s just get that out of the way right now, and we can all be friends, okay? Whip your own cream, people! Assuming you have an electric mixer of some kind, you can do it! Trust me. (more…) -

Black Bottom Cupcakes
Black bottom cupcakes are the best of two worlds: chocolate cake and cheesecake. They incorporate a rich chocolate cupcake with a dollop of cheesecake batter, which then get baked together into something magical. I don’t remember exactly when I first came across this recipe, but I know that it didn’t take long for me to talk myself into trying it out. I believe that I was introduced to this recipe by Smitten Kitchen, who credits the source of the recipe as David Lebovitz’s Great Book of Chocolate. After my first batch, I was hooked. (more…)
