  • Randazzo’s Little Italy (A Review)

    Randazzo’s Little Italy (A Review)

So, Miami Spice is back!  That means there are two months of discounted meals at fancy places headed my way.  This year, the first stop was Randazzo’s Little Italy in Coral Gables.  This restaurant serves Southern Italian cuisine, which encompasses the rich tomato sauce and olive oil rich cuisine that most of us associate with Italian food.  Co-owned by litigation attorney Jim Ferraro and retired boxer Marc Randazzo, this small restaurant sports the red-and-white checkered tablecloths that bring to mind a neighborhood Italian diner, without losing the Coral Gables swagger.  They are offering a three-course lunch for $23 until the end of September. • Toro Toro’s Bottomless Brunch Tapas (A Review)

Toro Toro’s Bottomless Brunch Tapas (A Review)

Toro Toro, located in the lobby of the Intercontinental Hotel in Downtown Miami, refers to itself as a Pan Latin Steakhouse.  On Saturdays and Sundays, however, they offer a tapas brunch.  For $35, you get all of the tapas you can handle in the space of 2 hours, plus brunch cocktails (mimosa and Bloody Mary).  Tapas, for those that don’t know, are a variety of appetizers and snacks in Spanish cuisine.  Tapas are typically small and meant to be ordered in quantities to share, rather than being an actual entree.  So, you get a couple of small plates brought to your table to share among everyone. • Michy’s All-You-Can-Eat Fried Chicken (A Review)

    Michy’s All-You-Can-Eat Fried Chicken (A Review)

Not long ago, I asked around as to where to get the best fried chicken in South Florida.  Aside from the standard chains (Popeye’s, Church’s), my friends didn’t have a whole lot of insight.  So, I turned to the Internet.  This is how I first heard of Michy’s fried chicken.  Michy’s, an upscale restaurant located in the North Miami area, offers a bottomless fried chicken dinner for $39 per person on Wednesday nights during the summer months.  Many locals seemed to swear undying allegiance to their fried chicken, so I figured it HAS to be good.  Fortunately for me, I found out about them during the summer, which meant that it was the perfect opportunity to give them a shot. • Peruvian Independence Day Festival 2013

    Peruvian Independence Day Festival 2013

July 28th marks the anniversary of Peru’s independence from Spain, which they won in 1821.  The annual Peruvian Independence Day Festival promised a gastronomically enlightening tour of Peruvian culture.  That also meant plenty of ceviche to go around. (more…)

  • Colombian Tamales

    Colombian Tamales

Tamales, depending on their country of origin, come in many shapes and sizes.  Despite this, the basic idea is the same.  You get yourself some masa, your filling of choice, then wrap it up in a leaf and boil or steam it.  Several hours later, you’ve got yourself a packet of deliciousness. • Angelique Euro Cafe (A Review)

    Angelique Euro Cafe (A Review)

Coral Gables Restaurant Week brought me to Angelique Euro Cafe for their three course lunch.  When I arrived, I was somewhat disappointed to discover that we would be seated outside, as there was a baby shower taking up the interior of the restaurant.  I was told that this happens quite often.  I guess this place is popular for large parties. • Talavera Cocina Mexicana (A Review)

    Talavera Cocina Mexicana (A Review)

Despite the name, Coral Gables Restaurant Week was a 3 week long affair.  During this time, restaurants located in Coral Gables offered discounted 3-course meals.  This basically translates to “go out and eat at places that you would normally be unable to afford.”  And, that is exactly what I did. • Lemon Risotto

    Lemon Risotto

If you have never had risotto, then shame on you.  If you have no idea what risotto even is, then shame on you even more.  This Italian dish is essentially creamy rice, and is usually served as a first course or main dish, although it can also be a side dish.  Unlike conventional rice cooking methods, in which you add all of your liquid to the rice at the start, risotto achieves its creamy consistency by slowly and gradually adding liquid to the rice while it cooks.  The liquid is usually broth.  Chicken broth seems to be the popular way to go, although beef, fish, seafood, or vegetable broth can also be used.

  • Molten Chocolate Cake

    Molten Chocolate Cake

One upon a time, a molten chocolate cake or chocolate lava cake was classy ending to a fancy meal.  Then, it started cropping up at chains like Red Lobster, Chili’s, and Applebee’s.  And, when you can get a dessert at a place where a group of servers will sing to you on your birthday while cursing their lot in life, there is no room for pretentiousness. • Lobster Mac and Cheese

    Lobster Mac and Cheese

I don’t know how many people would actually think of mac and cheese when they think of gourmet food.  Mac and cheese, to me, was always a comfort food or cookout/BBQ staple.  So, when I first saw lobster mac and cheese on the menu at Capital Grille, I knew I had to try it.  For one, I had to know how a fine dining establishment would interpret mac and cheese.  For another, there is always a good chance that I may never be able to afford this kind of meal again.  These are troubled times, and I’m not a broke baker for nothing!
