    Riverwalk Trust Burger Battle 2013

Burger Battle is easily one of the annual food events that I look forward to the most.  And, why not?  You basically get to walk around, sampling burgers from numerous restaurants competing for the title of “Best Burger”, and then vote for your favorite.  And, as if that wasn’t enough, there is also a French fry bar (catered by Capital Grille this year) and a dessert bar (catered by Susie’s Scrumptious Sweets).  So, with an open mind and empty stomach, I ventured forth into the burger bliss! • Macaron by Patisse

    Macaron by Patisse

Ah, the French macaron.  Having a general aversion to eggs, I ignored these meringue-based cookies for quite some time.  Then, a few years ago, I came across a French bakery at a chocolate festival that was giving out samples.  I tried their coffee macaron, and my life was never the same again.  I have tried recreating them at home, with little success.  Now, I just grit my teeth and shell out the exorbitant price of each cookie. Benny’s Seafood (A Review)

It has probably been at least 2 years since I saw the episode of Food Network’s “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” in which Guy Fieri gushes about the mofongo at Benny’s Seafood in Miami, FL and decided that I MUST try it out.  Yes, it took me a while.  If it wasn’t because I was broke (refer to blog name, HA!), it was because I didn’t have the time.  If I had the time, I had no one to come with me.  Because, who wants to venture into the unknown alone!?  This would be my first time having Puerto Rican food, and I wanted some moral support! Flan, or creme caramel, is one of those things that you either love or hate.  I didn’t like it at first, but then grew to love it.  I have a soft spot for custard-based desserts, so it’s right up my alley.  The premise is simple.  Fill the bottom of a ramekin with caramelized sugar, fill it with custard, bake, and then flip it over onto a plate and enjoy! You know those people that go to the grocery store and grab a bunch of stuff that they don’t need because it’s on sale?  Well, guilty as charged.  In particular, I grab ingredients that might come in handy for baking.  I can’t help myself.  It goes into my shopping cart as I imagine all of the delicious things that I might be able to do with it. Mercadito Midtown (A Review)

Happy Cinco de Mayo!  Yes, the holiday where all Americans are Mexican, and all Mexicans want nothing to do with Americans.  Plus, a great excuse to have some Mexican food!  Technically, I was a week early, but I only got around to writing this now. (more…)

  • Latin House Grill (A review)

    Latin House Grill (A review)

For several months, I have been urged by several coworkers to try out Latin House Grill, which is located in South Miami.  A restaurant that specializes in burgers and tacos didn’t really catch my attention.  After all, they are 2 very different styles of cuisine, so how can you master both?  To me, it conjured up thoughts of the many Chinese restaurants in the area that sell fried plantains.  Yet, despite my apprehension, I took the plunge, and dragged a friend with me. Creme Brulee Donuts

I don’t remember what exactly made me start thinking about donuts again.  All I know is that, for about a week, they were quite imprinted in my mind.  Then, while looking up recipes for donuts, I came across a recipe for creme brulee donuts that caught my eye.  Why did no one think of this sooner!?  More importantly, why are the only donut shops where one can buy them so far away?  So, I made it my weekend project to give these a whirl.  (more…)

    Flip Burger Bar (A Review)

In case it wasn’t already obvious, I LOVE burgers.  Well, I love food in general, but burgers are one of several food items that I absolutely could never do without.  So, when a friend pointed out that USA Today named a local burger joint one of the Top 25 Burgers in the country, I jumped at the chance to try a new burger place. Pretty much every movie or TV sitcom that finds the characters in Hawaii will feature a luau.  And, one of the staples of any luau is Kalua pig.  The word Kalua actually means “to cook in an underground oven.”  So, as the name implies, Kalua pig refers to pig that is cooked in an imu (a type of underground oven).
