    Pastel Imposible (AKA Chocoflan)

I love chocolate cake.  I love flan.  So, what happens when you combine the two?  Pure excellence!  Pastel imposible translates into “impossible cake” for you non-Spanish speakers, and it gets its name from the seemingly impossible feat of layering creamy flan on a bed of dense chocolate cake.  It is believed that this dessert originated in Mexico, where it is still very popular to this day. Granola Bars

There are those whose metabolisms are off the charts.  For the rest of us, there are diets.  And, now that I am in my thirties, dieting seems to be a way of life.  Except on the weekends, of course.  Everyone knows that calories don’t count on Saturdays and Sundays.

Say No to Crack (another Empanada post)

    Crack kills, mmkay?

Colombian empanadas, while utterly delicious, are a bit of a pain to make. Seasoned cooks can probably crank them out with little trouble.  I am not, however, a particularly seasoned cook when Colombian cuisine is concerned.  Most dishes are so time-consuming and extensive, that I don’t make them often.  As such, I don’t get a whole lot of practice. • Vegan Empanadas

    Vegan Empanadas

Vegan food, to me, is a scary thing.  Being a self-proclaimed foodie, it would be a hard thing for me to do – giving up entire food groups for the rest of your life.  Heck, I struggle to stick to a 1700 calorie-a-day diet.  But, we won’t talk about that too much. (more…)

  • Red Velvet Waffles

    Red Velvet Waffles

Red velvet cake was, for a long time, something that I refused to try.  In fact, the first time I made it (at someone’s request), I didn’t even like it.  It took a while for me to decide to try a different recipe, which turned out FANTASTIC!  So, with boyfriends being a notable exception, it never hurts to give things another chance when they fail to impress you the first time. Pollos y Jarras (A Review)

If you’ve never had Peruvian food, then you are missing out.

I had heard of Ceviche 105 from when they participated in Miami Spice last year, but never got around to making it over there.  A recent glance at their web site showed that the owner had opened a Peruvian roast chicken restaurant next door called Pollos y Jarras.  And, since I was going to be Downtown anyway, then why not? • Shula Burger (A Review)

    Shula Burger (A Review)

To most South Floridians old enough to remember, Don Shula is a football legend.  To those of us in the slightly younger generation, Don Shula is the name plastered on a chain of high-end steakhouses scattered about South Florida.  It was only a matter of time before the franchise branched out into burgers.  After all, if you know your steaks, then burgers should be a cakewalk.  Thus, Shula Burger was born. • Happy New Year!

I’m back!  After almost 2 years of neglect, I have finally returned with the full intent of committing to keep this blog updated.  And, thanks to some upward mobility in the workforce, I am now the “not-as-broke” baker.  That doesn’t have the same ring to it, though.  What does this mean for this blog?  Basically, aside from logging any culinary experiments, I will also be reporting on restaurants and food events that I visit.  So, let’s get 2013 started!

  • In Search of Blue Jello Shots

In Search of Blue Jello Shots

So, this is my first post in over a year (shame on me), but for good reason. School got a little crazy, what can I say? Now, with about 2 weeks before I officially finish, it’s time to get the graduation party planning kicked into high gear! (more…)

The Search for the Ultimate Cocoa Powder (Conclusion)

The results are in! Each batch of cupcakes was baked the same way. Same recipe. Same quantities. Same baking time. The only difference was the brand of cocoa powder added in each batch of cupcake batter. Even before the tasting, you can see the subtle differences! (more…)
